Daniel M. Alongi | Senior Principal Research Analyst, Australian Institute of Marine Science

Daniel M. Alongi is a Senior Principal Research Scientist in the Sustainable Coastal Ecosystem & Industries in Tropical Australia Program. Mr. Alongi's responsibilities include striving to acquire funding for the institute for science programs with regards to coastal biogeochemistry and coral reef ecology. He currently manages two teams--one project involves carbon biogeochemistry and the other focuses on ocean acidification. Mr. Alongi also conducts research, and his primary research interest is in understanding the biogeochemical functioning of tropical coastal and marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on mangrove and coral reef environments. His research interests include understanding the structure and function of soft-bottom benthic ecosystems, especially microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling. He has published more than 175 science and technical papers in international journals, and he manages six of these publications. He also attends monthly research meetings of the team leaders he oversees.
